Sometimes you have leftover stale bread, and you just throw them away and it becomes waste! Well, fear not the stale bread, you can always make bread butter pudding recipes with them!

Bread butter pudding is a delicious alternative dessert that you can quickly whip up at home and in this recipe, I will show you how to make the best bread butter pudding recipe.

Crispy on the outside sweet and soft on the inside, just a plate of deliciousness.

WHAT IS BREAD BUTTER PUDDING?

Now, for those of you who don’t know what bread butter pudding is, it’s a dish made out of bread, eggs, cream and seasonings. Bread butter pudding is a classic British dish that has been made for centuries. The earliest recipe dated all the way back to the early 1700s. But back then, bread butter pudding was made from bone marrow. The modernized version, however, is made with an egg custard.

The delicious bread butter pudding can be served warm or cold. Personally, I like it warm as you can add toppings like ice cream or whipped cream on top. Bread butter pudding is very versatile, as you can eat it for breakfast, lunch or dessert. Not only that but you can make your very own variation of bread butter pudding, like what I will show you in this recipe.

CHOCOLATE CHIP WALNUT BREAD BUTTER PUDDING

Experimenting with different types of ingredients is what I love to do to personalize my own recipe, which is why I made a chocolate chip walnut bread butter pudding. Original flavour bread butter pudding is delicious, but why stop there? I wanted to add more flavour and texture to this delightful dish, so I added chocolate chips and chopped walnuts.

HOW TO MAKE CHOCOLATE CHIP WALNUT BREAD BUTTER PUDDING

Bread butter pudding is made with stale bread, so you can make it when your bread is going stale or you can make your own stale bread by baking it in the oven just as I will be doing in this recipe. Other substitutes for bread include pastries like croissants, danishes, sourdoughs, etc. But always make sure that they are on the dry/stale side. You want the bread base to be stale as it will be absorbing a lot of moisture from the egg custard that you will pour over later.

The egg custard is the next thing you need to make that gives the ultimate flavour of the bread butter pudding. For this egg custard, I made the base with milk so it’s not too heavy. Then, I added a sprinkle of ground cinnamon and fresh grated nutmeg to emphasize the flavour of the custard.

The rest is to add the extra toppings, which are chocolate chips, chopped walnuts, as well as a little bit of almond slices. Finally, you will bake it to set the custard, thus sticking the bread pieces together.

SERVING THE BREAD BUTTER PUDDING

Bread butter pudding is great at any time of the day, whether for breakfast, lunch or dessert. Usually, I cut a fresh, warm slice for myself and eat it as it is. But you can always eat it with a scoop of ice cream on the side as well as dollop of whipped cream.

So go ahead and try it for yourself!

Some tips that might be useful:

  • You have the option to substitute the type of bread you would like, for example: croissants, danishes, sourdough, etc.
  • Make sure that the bread base is dry.
  • You have the option to add other toppings of your choice like white chocolate, caramel, etc.
